This Robin Hood retelling is set on the American continent after the fall of our unsustainable industrial infrastracture. (Yeah...)
***
Riley is kidnapped by a boy her own age at gunpoint. She's shoved into a car, when she's never been in a running one before, and is used to threaten men blockading the road into letting him get away.
Her kidnapper is a boy she knew when she was small, from town: Piper, who was going to be lynched for stealing and selling the town's last treasured Advil. In a society hording the last remnants of technologically advanced medicines, it's an offense that puts people beyond reason. He has to run.
When the gas runs out, he tells Riley she can wait for the posse on his trail. They'll bring her home. He's fleeing into the Ozarks, where there is still game to hunt, and rain to grow crops, because he doesn't have the time to prove he didn't steal the medicines.
Riley isn't sure she wants to go home to her abusive stepmother, though, and running away to where things are green sounds amazing...
